My FamilyVisits Chicago! (Finally)

July 16, 2017

I've been living in Chicago going on four years and my Mom and brother are just now visiting. It was a quick weekend but we managed to get a lot in! We enjoyed brunch at Smack Dab in Rogers Park. Took the Red Line to The Field Museum. My Mom was very adamant we see the Jurassic World exhibit. It kinda takes you back to the good ole days of field trips, packed lunches and juice boxes. We ate dinner at a new (to me) ramen spot Slurping Turtle.

Sunday was Swedish waffles, pancakes and meatballs at Ann Sather in Edgewater. We visited and made some new friends at the SGI Buddhist Center on Wabash. Headed to Millenuim Park. Got to see "The Bean" for

the first time. The official name of fhe sculpture is called Cloud Gate. We walked down The Magnificent Mile. And ended up at one of my fave Lincoln Park hangouts, The Otherside. The gallery of our quick Chitown adventure is below!

#InstaMakeup

July 9, 2017

Instagram is flooded with beauty products. Drawstring bras, waist trainers, silicone sponges and tummy teas. It's a bit ridiculous. But when a good product comes along you'll definitely hear about it. A lot. Dose of Colors and Wunderbrow are two beauty brands that gained their fame on Instagram. Backed by various IG Makeup Artists, bloggers and YouTubers.

Now these brands are available at ULTA Beauty! This means I can try these products with the benefit of rewards points. They're currently only available online. My hope is that ULTA adopts more cult favorites that cater to Black women like Juvia's Place and Coloured Raine.

DIY Distressed T-Shirt

July 3, 2017

Distressed tees are everywhere. On the 'gram, H&M, Pinterest, Tumblr... You name it! But it doesn't make sense to overpay for something you can create yourself. It really isn't hard or time consuming. I picked up an Adventure Time tee at Hot Topic for the low. All I needed was a plastic garbage bag (to protect my floor), scissors, a spray bottle and bleach. Reach out to me on IG if you want a tutorial! I even made a creation for our Stylist Chiquita Carey! Don't forget to check out her page TruVanity and Akisha's page She's Gotta Show here on AINIOM to see what what they're up to!

Meal Prepping & Macros

June 12, 2017

I stumbled upon Gauge Girl Training's YouTube channel and got some really great insight aboit my body type, how food and exercise affect me specifically. The channel is hosted by Christine. She's a Chemical Engineer and a Food Scientist by trade and she really knows her stuff! I've gotten some pretty good info from other health and fitness gurus but She. Breaks. It. Down.

I'm learning about macros (carbs, protein and fat) and why it's so important to know how much of each I consume daily and why I can't "compete" within my body. I've been meal

prepping for a week and it's been really good just being, well, prepared. I am less

likely to fall into traps because my full day of eating has already been mapped out.

The hardest thing has been letting go of alcohol. The glass of wine after work is no more. But I've been good and plan on sticking with it now that I know how alcohol prevents me from attaining my weight loss goals. Follow me to keep up with this new journey I'm on!

How to Finesse at ULTA 101

May 29, 2017

I make no secrets about being a former ULTA employee and I still prefer this beauty store (most of the time) over its competitor, Sephora. Here are a few tips I've learned over the years to save money on my fave beauty products. I got you boo!

ULTA Rewards

Make sure you're enrolled in the ULTAmate Rewards program. You will start accumulating points with every purchase you make. You earn 1 point for every dollar you spend and Platinum members (like me) earn 1.25 points for every dollar spent. Redemption chart is in the photo gallery above. You need 100 points minimum to start getting dollars off!

Check the Latest Ad

See what deals are going on before you head to the store. The latest ad always has a coupon. For example 20% off one item or $3.50 off a $15 purchase.

Earn 2x, 3x up to 5x Points!

Check your email often to see if there is a points boost you need to activate. You can earn points faster. Make sure to click 'activate' within the email. This will get you to the 100 points mark faster without having to actually spend $100.

Clip Coupons

ULTA will take a manufacturer coupon on top of any discount you're already getting. So, clip away! This is great if you need to purchase a drugstore brand like Maybelline or L'Oréal.

21 Days of Beauty

Is ULTA's semi annual event that highlights deals on specific beauty brands each day. If you plan accordingly you can catch great deals on brands like Tarte, Urban Decay and Becca Cosmetics.

Liter Event

Is an annual event, usually in the summer, where the liter size of your favorite professional salon shampoos and conditioners are deeply discounted. And they usually throw in a free pump! For example, when I was using Redken, liters will run you $34 each, but during this event they're as low as $12 each. And don't let me have some points to redeem on top of that!

The Friends & Family Discount

A few times a year ULTA employees are allowed to pass down their employee discount of 40% off to friends and family. I suggest you befriend an employee ASAP because this is not a deal you will receive by mail or email.

Return Policy

If you don't like something bring it back. Don't waste money on a product you're not pleased with. ULTA will give you a full refund if returned within 60 days with a receipt. No receipt? No problem. As long as you made your purchase under your rewards program then ULTA can find your receipt.

Dreams Los Cabos

May 22, 2017

I was invited as a guest to the Hardimon/Turner destination wedding to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and was also asked to do makeup for the bride Charish and her sister Chasati. We booked a stay at Dreams Los Cabos. An all inclusive resort with a concept of "Unlimited Luxury".

Room service was ordered every morning. I layed out in the sun (sunblock applied prior of course) had drinks served poolside. Took a slight dip, you know I wasn't getting my hair wet. Cocktails are even available at the swim-up bar called Manatees.

We did a group ATV excursion with Wild Canyon complete with dusty/rocky trail, cows and challenge to cross over a 1082 ft bridge hovering 164 ft above jagged rocks not just once, but TWICE. This isn't an excursion for the dainty and I did have to wash my hair because of all the dust and dirt.

After the thrill of pending death we enjoyed our lunches and dinners at each one of Dreams' six restaurants. Oceana had a great seafood soup and shrimp egg rolls. Seaside Grill served up a fresh mixed ceviche with fish, shrimp and octopus. My favorite dish was from Portofino. I had a delicious spicy Arrabiata.

The wedding ceremony was beachside and flawless from beginning to end. Everyone was dressed in white. I must say the melanin was poppin' in Cabo! The groomsman took over the DJ booth during the reception and we all had a great time!

Dreams Los Cabos is the way to go if it's your first time to Mexico or if it's your first introduction to all inclusive resorts. Check out my photos from my vacation. And make sure you follow me on:

MAC has arrived at ULTA!

May 15, 2017

Update: MAC Cosmetics is now available online only with ULTA Beauty! The rollout to select stores is coming! Here's some tips on how to save money on this department store staple:

1) Accumulate your ULTA Rewards points into until you have enough for dollars off your next purchase.

2) Use the weekly ad coupon. Typically it's $3.50 off a $15 or more purchase. But the coupon can vary.

You Got That Where?

May 8, 2017

Your local beauty supply store can have some great gems just waiting to be found. But if you're a brand snob then you might miss out on some great products that will save you coins! Not everything at the beauty supply is quality. And believe me, I've had my share of trial and error. You also have to find a store that has a good hair and makeup ratio. Some beauty supplies are ALL hair products. Here are a few brands that I love and buy in bulk whenever I'm in my fave BSS:

LA Girl Pro Conceal

LA Colors High Shine Lip Gloss

Nicka K lip products

Ruby Kisses

Ramen pronounced /Lah•Men/

April 16, 2017

Say it with me now. Laaaaah-men! Now that we've got the pronunciation down we can discuss one of my favorite comfort foods. Sure I've had to eat the packaged stuff, but, I grew up in Japan which means we had access to real ramen noodles with savory hot broth, fresh noodles and a variety of delicious (oishi) toppings like boiled egg, nori (seaweed) or kimchi.

For me it's been hard to find Japanese restaurants in the states that are owned/operated by actual Japanese people. It might be a minute detail for some or overlooked because one just simply doesn't know the difference. But it's important to me because that's where my grandma comes from and it's where I grew up. And that's where the whole comfort thing ties in.

Here in Chicago I've found a few places I really love. And THANK YOU if you've ever made a ramen spot recommendation and it made my list!

#1 High Five Ramen 112 W Green St

#2 Jinya Ramen Bar 553 W Diversey Pkwy

#3 Strings Ramen 2141 S Archer Ave

Best. Day. Ever.

April 10, 2017

Thanks to Uber & #AmexPlatinum I got the Chicago Bulls VIP experience! Tickets were deliver by Uber black car service. A box was dropped off with tickets, platinum wristbands and instructions to arrive at the United Center at 3pm sharp. Tonja and I were greeted with huge lunch boxes filled with sandwiches, chips, cookies, bottled water, brownies, fruit and $35 each in vouchers for more goodies at the consession stands! We had great seats on the first level behind the basket. At half time Benny the Bull joined us in our section and made himself comfortable right in Tonja's lap! Our faces even made it to the big screen.

Did I mention the Bulls won with over 100 points? This meant everyone got a free Big Mac (which I haven't had in ages but very excited about nonetheless). Right after the game we were whisked away to the members only Chicago Stadium Club. Staff offered us cocktails at the door and directed to the ice cream buffet inside.

Then the announcement. Scottie Pippen will be here shortly to sign Bulls jerseys for everyone! This is when we lost it Oprah-dreams-come-true-car-giveaway style! I met Scottie and he signed my jersey out to my name. And to think I had plans to do nearly nothing. This turned out to be an amazing day! Best. Day. Ever.

Introducing Hanahana Beauty

April 2, 2017

Akisha and I had a great meeting with Abena Boamah in Hyde Park. She is the creator of Hanahana Beauty! My second summer in Chicago we covered African Festival where I was introduced to real shea butter. Shea butter has done wonders for my dry elbows and feet especially in the winter months. But it solidifies even at room temperature and it smells very... "Natural". Which isn't bad but it's not pleasing either.

But here comes Abena with her wonderfully upgraded line of the shea butter products! It's smooth, rich and literally melts onto your skin like butter. The line currently consists of Shea Body Butter, Exfoliating Bar and Balm.  The product line is simple and 100% natural with skin loving ingredients like shea from Ghana, coconut oil and mango butter. Not to mention Hanahana's mission is to empower women of color by helping us see our own beauty inside and out. What's not to love? Please visit  hanahanabeauty.com and share with anyone who loves natural products made with integrity!

Juvia's Place Nubian 2 Palette

March 26, 2017

I created all my looks from last week with the help of my new Juvia's Place Nubian 2 eyeshadow palette. Juvia's Place is a black-owned cosmetic company and I chose to support them after watching several reviews from other Beauty Influencers about their experience with Juvia's product quality and customer service. They have several gorgeous palettes all themed around Nubian queens in shades that were meant to compliment women of color. Not to mention you get a lot more product in comparison to palettes I've purchased in the past from other companies.  Don't forget to follow me on Instagram and Snapchat keep up with my new looks!

M•A•C is Coming to ULTA

March 13, 2017

M•A•C has long been a staple for Pro Makeup Artists everywhere with deep roots in diversity and inclusivity. ULTA has announced that the cosmetic brand will debut in select stores this Spring. They are hoping to draw new customers to the line as both companies have very different consumer traffic patterns. M•A•C customers are accustomed to either visiting a freestanding store or braving the mall to find their fave Lip Glass in boughie department stores like Macy's and Nordstrom. So, for the more timid customer ULTA may be a better alternative to explore the brand. I'm torn because first of all, I haven't totally forgiven ULTA/Nyx for the Total Control Drop Foundation situation that led me to boycott ULTA all February. And two, the M•A•C experience is removed which cannot be duplicated at ULTA. The brand tolls out in May. I'm waiting to see if they will blame M•A•C for limited selection in shades for WOC (Women of Color) as well.

Spring Forward

March 6, 2017

Spring is really trying to make an appearance here in Chicago. It's literally a comfortable 60 degrees one day and snow the next. I'm ready to retire my dark lipsticks for now (or until I just get the urge to rebel). Pictured below I'm wearing an OCC (Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics) Lip Tar in Radiate. It's a nice coral that's more on the red side, so it's not too pink or too orange. Don't forget to follow me on Instagram and Snapchat for more product details!

Nicki, Nicki, Nicki!

February 26, 2017

First of all, my name is Nicky. Her name is Nicki. And I've thouroughly enjoyed being able to rap along to songs about me. Nicki is just everything! Sure, she's had some of moments of bad judgement (who hasn't), including dating Meek Mill. Ew! She's just raw. Period, point, blank. Even the Queen Bey herself acknowledges this. Yes, I heard her verse on Gucci's Make Love. And, it isn't even clear that she's dissing anyone in particular. Rumor has it, that it was meant for the uber annoying Azalea Banks. So, is this beef Remy started all for nothing? Also, the new found black feminist in me is really hating to see two black women in the media go at it yet again. I know beefs are a time honored tradition in Hip Hop, but it really sad how it pits black folks against each other. Another part of me is waiting on Nicki's retaliation. If she's gonna clap back at all she doesn't have much time to do it. I tweeted one of my fave podcasts Black Joy Mixtape and they give her until Wednesday to come back. Personally, I think it'll be too late by then. Nicki, you got this! #Barbz #Barbies #BlackBarbz

My Hairstylist Does My Makeup!

February 19, 2017

It took a few months but we were finally able to meet up and play in makeup! RJ has a very busy schedule working during the week at NBC on The Steve Harvey show and all. And my own schedule gets filled up pretty quickly with my own clients, AINIOM events and life! RJ just wants to learn some skills that will make him more marketable as an artist. Since he has a wonderful eye for beauty, it seems like makeup would be a natural extension of his creative abilities. We practiced a black smokey eye and I think he nailed it! I can't even tell you the last time someone other than myself has done my makeup. It felt good to be on the receiving end of this for a change! Nicky Horne vs. ULTA Beauty:

Excluding Women of Color is Inexcusable!

  Part 1

 January 30, 2017

This all started with a trip to ULTA on my way home from work. I was really excited to try out the new Total Control Foundation line by NYX. Mostly because the line has really been pushing inclusiveness and diversity by creating more shades to accommodate women and men of color.

This isn't a new problem with the the beauty industry. Apparently our dollars don't spend the same because it's still hard to find cosmetics lines that have a diverse shade range for face products.

The NYX display was bare, which was expected. But, the display only held enough for half of the shades offered in the Total Control line! I checked the ULTA website and and they clearly will not be selling any of the darker shades in-store because ALL the dark to deep shades are listed as "online only!" WTF?! My first reaction was Twitter fingers. I had to vent about it. And to my surprise ULTA responded. I've emailed a formal complaint since and also proposed a solution. Given the social and political climate in the US right now, this was not smart on their part.

  Part 2

  February 6, 2017

After the lackluster response I got from ULTA guest services, I went ahead and ordered directly from the Nyx website. I had to purchase a minimum of $25 in order to get free shipping. I later found out that one of the items I ordered was out of stock. My package arrived on Thursday as predicted. Got the foundation home. And whattya know, it's not the right shade [insert irritated emoji]. I'll have to return it for sure but it's a pain in the ass. Tweet me your thoughts on this and any suggestions.

  Part 3

  February 13, 2017

I walked into the ULTA store again last week to see if any shades had been added to the display. And nothing. The same nearly empty display still sits there with the same sad six shades as before. I took to Twitter again and expressed my frustration. This time the response was to blame Nyx for their limitation in the shades available. So, Nyx Cosmetics would create a so-called diverse line, then make it inconvenient for over half of it's potential customers to try it? This just doesn't make sense and we will get to the bottom of it. If this irritates you as much as it does me, I urge you to please file a formal complaint by emailing ULTA at gethelp@ULTA.com. Please join me on Twitter @nickynicolebear & Facebook to fight against the exclusion of women of color in the beauty industry.

Hidden Figures needs to be in schools ASAP!

After seeing #HiddenFigures it made me upset to know that these amazing black women were deleted from history. Kept from generations of young girls. Which leads me to ask, "How many more stories like this have been kept from us?". The upside is that we can teach a new generation about how Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson got the first American into space all while facing racism and sexism. It definitely sparked something in me.

I love makeup. But I also was a laser technician which required physics. Understanding light, spectrum and how different variables could ultimately result in permanent hair removal. I studied electrology which relies on the comprehension of direct and alternating current. We had to learn about the various physiological and mechanical reasons for superfluous hair growth.

I think it's great that to have a platform to express what I love but all of it isn't just superficial. Some of those things required STEM skills (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). I'm challenging myself to encourage more girls to explore STEM so they can have more options about their own possibilities.  Girls of color shouldn't only aspire to be Kardashians or Insta-famous. There is just so much more for us.

Girls 4 Science is a non-profit organization in Chicago that offers girls ages 10-18 hands on experiences, mentorship and scholarships in STEM fields. You can click the link to see how to get a young woman in your life involved or even donate Girls 4 Science

Working With Chris Tucker

First I'd like to thank Chiquita Carey for recommending me as a Makeup Artist. Apparently a celebrity needed one for a last minute shoot after their show at The Chicago Theatre. This turned out to be Chris Tucker! Yes... Friday-Money Talks-Fifth Element-Rush Hours 1, 2 & 3 Chris Tucker. Not only was I able to work with him but his team allowed me to see the show.

Donnie Smith is the Executive Director of Donda's House. She was invited to speak at  Boss Girl Magic's Ladies Who Brunch & Network. We went with a polished look and she was styled by our very own Chiquita Carey. Hit me up on Snap @nickynicolebear so you don't miss anything!

Go Shorty, it's ya birfffday!

I usually don't make a big deal out of my birthday, but I wanted something different this year. This weekend. One word. AMAZING! From the relaxing stay-cation at the Sofitel right in the heart of downtown Chicago with a city view from the 32nd floor to the penthouse party we crashed last minute. Everything was worth the sleep I didn't get.

On Friday I made an appearance at Refuge for First Friday's hosted by @Sigma_Chris. I got VIP treatment complete with my own section, bottle of Henny, birthday cake and the DJ even let me request Bad & Bouje (Ayyyyeee)! Everyone came thruuu including AINIOM fam Chiquita Carey.

Saturday and SundayI enjoyed a nice hot bowl of beef phô with my friends at Pastuer, my fave Vietnamese restaurant. And I drank sake and devoured salmon nigiri and dragon rolls with Tonja at Ra Sushi (who also sponsored The MUA Tour). It wouldn't be right without a trip to the Otherside Bar. Shout out to the manager Carlos for the round of shots. As if I needed any more! This weekend was eventful to say the least. Follow me on Snapchat  @nickynicolebear if you don't want to miss anything!

Halo Eyeshadow & Graphic Liner

I really wanted to do a NYE look but was so uninspired. It's the same thing every year. Glitter on the lids, glitter on the lips. Glitter! Glitter! Glitter! I took two shadow techniques and came up with this look for NYE.

Halo eyeshadow is a very pretty smokey eye with more intensity. Instead of applying the dominant lid color across the entire lid, it's place only on the center of the lid allowing the darker shadows used underneath it to "halo" around it. I used my Violet Voss Holy Grail palette for my transition, smokey and lid shades. I also used Blackout from Urban Decay to intensify the contrast in the halo.

Graphic liner is basically applying liquid eyeliner in a non-traditional way. I applied a white liquid liner from Nyx Cosmetics not on my lash line, but in the center of my eyelid where a crease would exist.

I finished off the look with a deep dark brown gloss from Ruby Kisses in Midnight Plum Black.

My makeup Q&A on Snapchat might be a weekly thing!

This past Thursday (12/22) I had my first open Q&A on Snapchat! Everyone was welcomed to ask me any makeup or beauty related question. A few things I got asked were "What lashes do you use?" and "What's your fave matte lipstick?". I'm thinking about making this a regular thing every week! I'd like to know what you all think. Hit me up on Snap @nickynicolebear and let me know!

Chicago "Hawk" can't keep me from being cute!

For those of you who don't know, Chicago has given a name to the relentless, bone chilling winter wind that cuts you so deep the instant you step one foot out the door. It's a wind so offensive that "F*CK!" is the only word that will be able to escape your lips. This my friends is called "The Hawk". But you think Imma let "The Hawk" keep me from being cute? Nah. Of course I used some of my staple products for the look below. L'Oreal True Match, Nyx Brow Gel and LA Girls concealer. But, follow me on Instagram @nickynicolebear for the full product details!

My quick trip to Orlando!

Just a few pics of my trip back home! Got to see my family and hit up three out of four Disney parks in a day! I need a vacation from my vacation!

Makeup, Trap, Gore?

October 31, 2016

October seems to be the only time of year that's appropriate for experimenting with Special FX makeup. But I've really been toying with the idea of using it more and more... I was inspired by a lot of work I had seen on IG.

Brown has been a Fall staple for a few years now. There was a time when brown lipstick was not really a thing. It was beauty's most under used color for lips. But, seeing as how I'm brown and all, I'm digging that brown in all shades is in. Shades of brown should be accepted in all facets of our lives, lipstick is just the start.

Metal Mouth

October 3, 2016

Metallics are what's up for Fall! Of course you can still also enjoy wearing your staple dark lip shades, but if you're looking for something a little different this is where it's at. Below I'm wearing NYX Cosmic Metals lip creme in Extraterrestrial and Electromagnetic. Follow me on Instagram and Snapchat @nickynicolebear for more Makeup x Trap x Sushi!

You know your girl loves her some makeup. But, I really wanted to be able to express with you guys the things I love and have influenced me creatively. So, I created a challenge for myself to give you all "31 Days of Makeup x Trap x Sushi". I picked these three things because they just make me happy. I've loved makeup as long as I can remember and it's my outlet for creativity, mood stress etc. I come from both a Black and Japanese background and I lived in Japan for eight years as a kid. So, I grew up on Japanese staples like sushi, ramen, yakisoba and tonkatsu. I've always been intrigued with trap music as well. I suppose in part because my Dad is a kid at heart and had always stayed current with music (We literally used to clean the house listening to Eminem). That's probably why I never got any flack for my taste in music. But, trap music almost always expresses how someone has overcome the most desperate circumstamces and have become whatever he/she considers to be successful. Plus, the beat is bangin'! Below is just a snapshot of a few things I've posted thus far. Follow me on Instagram and Snapchat @nickynicolebear for all of my adventures in #MakeupTrapSushi!

Back At It Again [Insert "Damn, Daniel" voice]

August 15, 2016

I have not been able to stop using my Violet Voss eyeshadow palette! I sang my praises about it in my previous blog post below, but I love it more and more each time I use it. This palette is perfect for a beginner Makeup Artist kit. It's smart to make a small investment in a palette like this because you'll have versatility. For the look below I used RU Kitten Me as the transition color, Wine N Dine, Brownie Points and Teddy Bear as the crease colors and Cranberry Splash. Don't forget to follow me on Snapchat @nickynicolebear for all of my adventures in #MakeupTrapSushi!

Bienvenido a Miami!

August 1,  2016

This getaway to Miami was much needed! While I enjoy #werking, it's important to slow down, rejuvenate your mind and have a little fun... Well, a lot of fun. I had the best time in South Beach. The car rental situation and the check in process at The Shore Club hotel was a little shaky. But, once we got over that hump it was smooth sailing! Our hotel sat in the heart of South Beach (SoBe) and just steps away from the beach. The weather was perfect. I spent every day on the beach sipping drinks, catching some sun. Tried to ride on a Waverunner for the first time. I was absolutely terrified, but I tried it anyway. Food was everywhere! You can't escape it. We had a delicious lox brunch at The Social Club. It was so good we went twice. We had the best platter of mussels at Quattro at Lincoln Road Mall. They really didn't have a mussels only dish but created it for us anyway. What's a trip to Miami without cigars? So, of course I endulged. I tried to hit up the nightclubs every night I was there... Clearly I'm not about that life! Even a shot of Cuban coffee could not wake me up to get me to go out on our third night. I mean, I could go on about this trip it was just that amazing! Check out some of the pics from my trip below! #southbeach #sobe #miami #vacation

Festival Makeup For TIP Fest 2016!

July 10, 2016

It is officially #SummerTimeChi and the weather is hot (the way I like it) and it's the season for festivals! Our first festival was TIP (Teens in the Park) Fest at Northerly Island Park. I whipped up a look using NYX Liquid Suede in Brooklyn Thorn. I've been looking for a matte grey lipstick or liquid lip that wasn't too brown or too light grey. This one is perfect! Check out our full coverage of TIP Fest on our EVENTS page!
